Fluid Replacements

Get Fluid Replacement for Your Vehicle at Alderman's Toyota

As you drive your vehicle, you might not think about all the components that keep it operating smoothly. There are a variety of fluids that course through your vehicle, ensuring it drives safely and efficiently. Replacing these fluids regularly is one of the most important forms of vehicle maintenance.

Vehicle Fluids That Need Replacement

Vehicle fluids that need to be replaced at regular intervals include:

  • Motor Oil: Motor oil is crucial to your car's ability to operate. Oil lubricates the engine's moving parts while also cooling and cleaning the engine. While changing your motor oil every three months or 3,000 miles is a safe bet, check your vehicle's manual to find its manufacturer-recommended interval.

  • Transmission Fluid: Transmission fluid lubricates the gears and other moving components in both manual and automatic transmissions. Transmission fluid should typically be changed every 25,000 to 40,000 miles.

  • Brake Fluid: Most vehicles have hydraulic brakes. These brakes need fluid to transfer the force applied to the brake pedal through the brake components to slow and stop the car. Brake fluid should be flushed and replaced about every 25,000 miles during your vehicle's brake pad and rotor replacement interval.
  • Engine coolant: Also known as antifreeze, engine coolant performs both functions: cooling the engine before to prevent overheating and preventing freezing when it's cold. Check your vehicle's manual to find the right type of coolant and how often it should be replaced.

  • Power Steering Fluid: Power steering systems use a similar hydraulic system as brakes to steer the vehicle. You should typically replace the power steering fluid every 60,000 to 80,000 miles.
  • Differential Fluid: Every vehicle has a differential or a series of gears, that transfer torque from the engine and transmission to the axles and wheels. Differentials need their own oil, which should be replaced every 80,000 to 120,000 miles.

  • Windshield Washer Fluid: While windshield washer fluid isn't as essential as the previous fluids, it's still important to keep your windshield clean. Most washer fluid can freeze in the frigid Vermont winters, so swap out your summer washer fluid for de-icer fluid when winter arrives.
